In the reported experiments, the phase constitution of blends of PVC, alpha -SAN and SAN-grafted butadiene rubber was investigated. The system is regarded as consisting of four polymeric components, i. e. PVC, alpha -SAN, SAN and butadiene rubber (BR) with the rubber particles always dispersed in a glassy matrix made of the other three components. The matrix itself turns out to be single-phase (homogeneous) or two-phase (heterogeneous), depending on the composition; the presence of rubber particles does not alter its phase structure. No appreciable influence of that structural difference on the impact behavior of the two systems is observed.
