This paper is devoted to the discussion of certain nonequilibrium states of gases and vapors in the free-molecular regime. In spite of the presence of temperature differences and, in some cases, of evaporation and condensation processes, the gas is shown to remain at rest. The case of a vapor in a tube of condensed phase, for which some numerical solutions are also given, is treated in some detail. (Authors)

Abstract
