|Abstract:||ESA Contract 21083 allowed the Agency and the Industry to perform an extensive evaluation of the needs for the migration from the currently used X-band (8.025 to 8.4 GHz) towards the Ka-band (25.5 to 27 GHz), assessing the impacts (i.e. target performance, technological status and required development) on architecture, on HW and at system level. It was found  that the usage of VCM technique improve the downlink margin characteristics in Ka-Band, through the adaptation of the data rate via changes of the channel coding and modulation on a frame-by-frame basis. High variability on atmospheric absorption is experienced in accordance to the G/S location, implying that a particular care shall be given to the selection of the G/S not only for higher contact time, but also for propagation issues. This paper is aimed to find a good compromise between the number of ground stations, the achievable performance such as mission downlink data throughput when VCM techniques are implemented, data timeliness and instrument duty cycle, and the cost.|
