The present work deals with two aspects of the geological simulation of sedimentary basins: the modelling of their structural evolution and the hydrocarbon generation and expulsion. The sedimentary basin layers are modelled as stratified incompressible fluids and an original scheme is proposed to solve this problem. For what concerns hydrocarbon generation the proposed numerical model includes differential retention effects and is thus able to describe fractionation effects providing correct estimates of the expulsion time and the chemical composition of the expelled oil and gas.

Abstract

The present work deals with two aspects of the geological simulation of sedimentary basins: the modelling of their structural evolution and the hydrocarbon generation and expulsion. The sedimentary basin layers are modelled as stratified incompressible fluids and an original scheme is proposed to solve this problem. For what concerns hydrocarbon generation the proposed numerical model includes differential retention effects and is thus able to describe fractionation effects providing correct estimates of the expulsion time and the chemical composition of the expelled oil and gas.
