Between 1999 and 2005 Japan and Italy concluded the privatization of their expressway networks. In both cases the main trigger for the privatization was the huge public debt faced by the two nations. It thus seems worth to analyse and compare the two processes, trying to evaluate the consequences on the general economic well-being according to a public economics viewpoint.
