The book combines theoretical, practical, and artistic approaches related to public space. It results from the European research HUMAN CITIES (2008-2010) that aimed to create an international encounter between various approaches and experiences to intervene in the public space. The paper, written with Paola Trapani, presents a social innovation-led approach to designing public space. Assuming social innovation as a significant change in the way individuals or communities act, often as a bottom-up initiative, in order to produce a result, it discusses the motivations that spur groups or communities to take action regarding public space, and how design can support them. This perspective implies the power of the social fabric to shape the meaning and structure of a physical public space, instead of the other way round.
