Light is the essence of cinema. Light is the necessary condition for existence of cinema: it makes the film shooting possible, and in the same way, it makes film projection possible. For these and many other reasons, light is one of the fundamental elements that must be taken into account when analyzing a movie scene. In this paper we propose the use of a 3D computer graphic reconstruction of a film fragment during a course on cinema analysis that focuses on lighting. In particular we describe how a specifically conceived application, that allows students to play around with lights in scene, can be exploited to create a more effective course on this subject. A case study that focuses on the movie “The conformist” by Bernardo Bertolucci is finally presented.
