This contribution presents a preliminary analysis of some spatial and temporal characteristics of rain cells based on the weather radar images collected at Spino d’Adda (Italy). It has been found that precipitation structures can be described in terms of an ensemble of aggregates, identified by the 1 mm/h rain intensity threshold, 30 km apart one from each other, on the average, containing a variable number of rain cells, identified by the 5 mm/h threshold. The time evolution of the cells, synthesized in this study with an exponential profile of the rain intensity inside, is well represented by a diffusive model.

Abstract

This contribution presents a preliminary analysis of some spatial and temporal characteristics of rain cells based on the weather radar images collected at Spino d’Adda (Italy). It has been found that precipitation structures can be described in terms of an ensemble of aggregates, identified by the 1 mm/h rain intensity threshold, 30 km apart one from each other, on the average, containing a variable number of rain cells, identified by the 5 mm/h threshold. The time evolution of the cells, synthesized in this study with an exponential profile of the rain intensity inside, is well represented by a diffusive model.
