This paper presents the fundamentals of model-based tuning, together with some well established tuning techniques for industrial regulators derived from this approach. It also tries to evidence the potential of the model-based tuning approach by itself, suggesting its adoption not only as a source of new tuning recipes but also as an extremely productive way of thinking. Mathematics is kept as light as possible and references are provided for the interested reader.
