As the central part of the book, it explores the manner in which the buildings typical of the twentieth century have deteriorated as they have aged. The main aim will be to offer a systematic description of the ‘pathologies’ afflicting structures built using concrete, artificial stone and reinforced concrete comparing various formal definitions in order to propose a ‘lexicon’ that can be used by those working in the redevelopment and restoration of modern and contemporary architecture. The scale of the material brought together also provides scholars with extensive food for thought. The visual images chosen to exemplify each type of deterioration are presented along with a number of different structures where this specific phenomenon is to be found. Thence such phenomena, each carefully defined, are referred via individual information files to a known work of architecture of a specific date. The result is an overall pictures that brings together examples which broadly illustrate the types of change and deterioration to which twentieth-century concrete architecture is subject.
