The work examines the post-war architectural and urban planning events in Italy, by paying particular attention to the problems of the reconstruction of urban centres which were destroyed or damaged by strafings, and to the relationship between the necessity to safeguard the remaining historical values and the opportunities of an urban restructuring for the improvement of their functionality and hygienic conditions. For this purpose, the research inquires both into the theoretical motivations and into the administrative and technical instruments through which the rebuilding was carried out. In particular, the work is divided into several survey themes, and deals with the architectural and urban debate related to the relationship between contemporary architecture and old towns and the legislative and technical instruments arranged by the government and the Ministry of Labour. Furthermore, there is a wide selection of study cases, meaningful for the nature of the problems they cope with or for the specificity of the suggested solutions. A series of considerations is finally devoted to the teachings that can be drawn, in relation to the current italian situation, where the problem arises in relation to abandoned industrial areas, and which can be somehow assimilated, in planning themes, to those arisen during the rebuilding years (to build in built places, relationship between architecture and urban projects, conservation or refurbishing of existing buildings).
