The manuscript investigates opportunities deriving from future applications in plant simulation and process control, by going beyond the conventional Operator Training Simulator (OTS) paradigm. Specifically, the paper considers forthcoming applications and future challenges in the industrial and operator safety as well as in the human factor prevention. In this perspective, a brief overview of both academic and industrial state of art in safety science is proposed and the newest and upcoming technologies are discussed. In particular, the operation safety is going to radically change in the next years, through the implementation of on-the-field techniques, such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.

Abstract
The manuscript investigates opportunities deriving from future applications in plant simulation and process control, by going beyond the conventional Operator Training Simulator (OTS) paradigm. Specifically, the paper considers forthcoming applications and future challenges in the industrial and operator safety as well as in the human factor prevention. In this perspective, a brief overview of both academic and industrial state of art in safety science is proposed and the newest and upcoming technologies are discussed. In particular, the operation safety is going to radically change in the next years, through the implementation of on-the-field techniques, such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
