The paper intends to investigate the role of large displacements on the stability of the pylons of cable supported bridges. As known, the behavior of long span supported bridges is strongly influenced by non linear geometrical effects. Comparative studies examine the influence of the geometrical characteristics of the pylon and of the imposed imperfections, in the hypothesis of small displacements, as well as of large displacements and strains. The equilibrium paths are traced through a numerical model, suitable to deal with large displacements and large strains.

Abstract

The paper intends to investigate the role of large displacements on the stability of the pylons of cable supported bridges. As known, the behavior of long span supported bridges is strongly influenced by non linear geometrical effects. Comparative studies examine the influence of the geometrical characteristics of the pylon and of the imposed imperfections, in the hypothesis of small displacements, as well as of large displacements and strains. The equilibrium paths are traced through a numerical model, suitable to deal with large displacements and large strains.
