The paper describes the activities performed within the European Community funded project HIPERWHEEL in order to define a model to be used for the prediction of contact fatigue damage and wear of wheel surfaces. The capability of the model to reproduce realistic load spectra for contact forces is investigated. Then, the numerical procedure adopted for switch crossing simulation is described. Finally, RCF damage prediction is discussed together with the developed interface of the multi-body model with the package FIERCE for the evaluation of RCF damage.

Abstract

The paper describes the activities performed within the European Community funded project HIPERWHEEL in order to define a model to be used for the prediction of contact fatigue damage and wear of wheel surfaces. The capability of the model to reproduce realistic load spectra for contact forces is investigated. Then, the numerical procedure adopted for switch crossing simulation is described. Finally, RCF damage prediction is discussed together with the developed interface of the multi-body model with the package FIERCE for the evaluation of RCF damage.
