Nowadays, companies and industries have to face the market challenge to design, produce and manage new products in even less time, moreover, in this trend, individual customer satisfaction is a requirement of increasing importance. This market environment leads medium and large industries to develop, where it is possible, modular products based on a common frame. Time reduction and improved quality are therefore achieved assigning the design and development of the various sub-assemblies of the product to different, more specialised, working groups. The application of this industrial strategy requires the description of the best modular structure of the product under develop and the identification of the most efficient way to use the company's human resources. This work is devoted to furnish a common approach to the explained problem and to identify a strategy for the design of the product. The suggested solution is to perform the design process with a methodical approach that must be able to support the generation of a modular product according to the market and the single customer requirements.
