A combined experimental and theoretical study of fatigue crack closure behaviour, in two structural steels, has been conducted. To create an experimental data bank needed to calibrate a strip yield model for crack growth predictions, closure measurements were performed for either material. The adequacy of closure estimates was proved by the ability of the corresponding effective stress intensity factor range to reconcile the crack growth rates observed in fatigue test under various loading conditions. The model calibration is realized by imposing constraints on yielding of the plastic strip elements to match the crack opening levels predicted by the model with the observed closure behaviour. With this purpose, several conceptions of constraint factors on tensile and compressive yielding at the crack tip have been incorporated into the model and evaluated.
