The case study in question is that of the refurbishment of a building constituted by four pavilions used as laboratories in the Feltrinelli Technical Industrial Institute in Milan. The study has been commissioned by the Administration of the Province of Milan following a previous analysis regarding other buildings of he same complex. The four pavilions were originally built with constructive and spatial criteria typical of the industrial building sector in the post-war period of the 20th Century: vaulted with very lightweight reinforced concrete arches. Different retrofit hypotheses have been evaluated by the means of the ESP-r software tool, taking into account heating energy consumption, summer temperatures attainable through natural ventilation, daylighting, space use, construction implications and building conservation objectives. The results have led to the suggestion to reject the most radical design hypothesis, implying the adoption of a morphology more compatible with the original one, but better performing at environmental level.
