Abstract Brillouin scattering of laser light provides a contact-less technique to measure the acoustic excitations of sub-micrometric wavelength, which are a sensitive tool to probe the elastic properties of thin films: from the measured propagation velocities the elastic properties can be derived. Examples of nanometric carbon films and of a micrometric silica film are presented.
