The debate carried out during the 50s, at the last Ciam Conferences focused on the city, seen not in terms of its structural aspects, but as an organism, a living structure. In this perspective, the architects spoke about the Heart of the City (Hoddesdon 1951) and the Habitat (Aix-enProvence 1953) in order to define places that have value for their inhabitants insofar as they are capable of recalling the archetypal relation between the definition of a space and the ritual of a community, also at a time when the new scale of the urban phenomenon in terms of extension and complexity had reached a level wholly incommensurable with anything previous.
