An analytical model for studying the Kerr-induced phase-shift by a single bit of a communication signal is developed. Based on this theory, an experiment for measuring the impact of the Kerr effect on the performance of lightwave systems in the presence of optical amplifiers is performed. In particular, the setup permits a direct and in-line measurement of the Kerr induced phase modulation in an operating transmission system. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical expectations.

Abstract
An analytical model for studying the Kerr-induced phase-shift by a single bit of a communication signal is developed. Based on this theory, an experiment for measuring the impact of the Kerr effect on the performance of lightwave systems in the presence of optical amplifiers is performed. In particular, the setup permits a direct and in-line measurement of the Kerr induced phase modulation in an operating transmission system. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical expectations.File in questo prodotto:
