In the first section the authors motivate the publication of this paper, drawn from a thesis discussed at the Trieste University in 1961, and written in memory of the work of Antonio Marussi, on the occasion of one century from his birth. In §2 the problem of the existence of an orthogonal coordinate system adapted to a family of equipotential surfaces is discussed and a historical Darboux condition is derived and illustrated through examples. Abstract

In §3 the transformation of the Darbaux condition into an intrinsic form is presented. Short conclusions follow.
