In the chapter, first the equation governing the stress analysis problem for the elastic one phase (solid) continuum are recalled. Then various types of linear and non linear, time independent and time dependent constitutive laws are illustrated with particular reference to those proposed for modelling the mechanical behaviour of rocks and soils. The basis of some approaches for numerical stress analysis are subsequently recalled and, finally, the finite element formulation for linear, elastoplastic and visco-plastic stress analyses are discussed in some details.

Abstract

In the chapter, first the equation governing the stress analysis problem for the elastic one phase (solid) continuum are recalled. Then various types of linear and non linear, time independent and time dependent constitutive laws are illustrated with particular reference to those proposed for modelling the mechanical behaviour of rocks and soils. The basis of some approaches for numerical stress analysis are subsequently recalled and, finally, the finite element formulation for linear, elastoplastic and visco-plastic stress analyses are discussed in some details.
