Abstract

This essay is an analysis (represented on a map by the author) that aims at explaining the recent changes on Turin's urban shape. The present transformation process of Turin is occurring in three phases, each corresponding to a particular area of the city. The first, in its southern part, is an east-west swathe positioned from Italia '61 area to the renovated city stadium, scene of the opening cerimony of the Trin 2006 winter Olympics. The second area stretches along the new so-called "spina" (backbone) boulevard, built after the restructuring works on the the railway line crossing the city and as a part of the new master plan aimiing at redifining Turin in its post industrial context. The third re-development phase and area centre on the rivitalization of the Dora river. Once key to Turin's initial industrialization, this area, together with the Spina axis, is now the focus of new town planning developments that aim at transforming Turin into a new city of knowledge and creativity.
