A finite element approach is presented for the analysis of a fluid saturated porous medium, taking into account the strain softening behaviour of its skeleton. First, the field equations and the main characteristics of the finite element formulation are recalled for the linear case. Then, the problem is extended to strain softening effects through a simple material model which views this phenomenon as a consequence of an intrinsic loss of strength of the material taking place when the plastic strains exceed a given limit value. Finally, the numerical procedure is applied to the analysis of an undrained compression test on a sample of dense sand to investigate, in particular, the influence of the testing conditions on the overall response of the specimen.
