For the first time in Italy, this publication offers a complete translation of Wilfred Owen’s war poetry and poetic fragments, accompanied by an extensive critical and scholarly apparatus. At the heart of the volume is a comprehensive critical essay that explores Owen’s life, artistic development, and literary achievement, examining his poetry from historical, literary, linguistic, and cultural perspectives. Particular attention is devoted to the complex relationship between poetic expression, the traumatic experience of warfare, and the profound transformation of individual and collective consciousness brought about by the First World War. The edition also includes a detailed biography of the poet, a chronological account of the major historical and cultural events of his time, and the original English texts presented alongside their Italian translations. An extensive body of explanatory notes addresses linguistic and philological questions while illuminating the historical, political, social, medical, military, and anthropological dimensions of Owen’s work. The formal analysis of each poem is further enriched by an examination of its rhyme scheme and metrical structure. A comprehensive bibliography, covering scholarly publications from the early twentieth century to 2024, brings together critical editions, monographs, academic articles, essays, doctoral dissertations, and conference proceedings published in Italy and internationally. Combining textual scholarship, historical research, and literary criticism, the volume seeks to provide Italian readers with a comprehensive understanding of one of the most powerful and distinctive poetic voices of the First World War, while contributing to the broader international appreciation of Owen’s literary and human legacy.
