The design of public buildings remains a distinct issue from that of residential architecture, even though both can be seen as interrelated in relation to the city. This essay addresses certain issues concerning the public building as a means of rediscovering the rationale behind architecture from a specific thematic perspective, in accordance with the definition provided by O.M. Ungers. Drawing on a range of examples, some well-known and others less so, predominantly drawn from 20th-century European architecture, the aim is to identify themes that may be useful to those undertaking a design project in an educational context. The selection of case studies covered is confined to a specific time frame, ranging from the Modernist period to the contemporary debate on the theme of critical reconstruction, seeking to demonstrate how these more critical-theoretical considerations are reflected in the practice of design teaching. This is illustrated through three thesis projects discussed at Politecnico di Milano in recent years, which share two central themes: the public building and critical reconstruction.
