Life cycle assessments (LCAs) of conventional and innovative photovoltaic systems are discussed, showing both theories and practices related to sustainability and environmental impact. Technical performance and environmental performance of a variety of photovoltaic (PV) systems are investigated. Environmental performance is based on life cycle assessment methodology. An LCA comparison between six building-integrated photovoltaics solutions for the envelope is shown. Based on the analysis, some improvement suggestions are provided to improve the awareness of the environmental impacts of PV technology.
