Building knowledge about extended mobility

This chapter discusses how bottom-up and collaborative research efforts can enhance situated knowledge acquisition regarding Extended Mobility in diverse and peripheral contexts that can support the development of the city as a common. It proposes methodological steps to analyze motility, accessibility, and porosity and assess how they can be operationalized in the territories where they occur. The proposed methodology is open to collective activity spaces and individually referenced spaces. This chapter also argues that data collection and field research examining Extended Mobility should adopt a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach drawing from surveys, non-participant observation, participatory action-research techniques, and secondary data sources. In particular, it advocates rhythmanalysis as both a research technique and an ontological orientation capable of illuminating alterity and thus making place for the Other.
