Several Italian cities are experimenting with innovative approaches in which co-design plays a key role. Port cities, constrained by limited space, urbanised port hinterlands, and environmentally sensitive coastal areas, are increasingly encouraged to adopt more integrated and flexible approaches - a flexibility that is simultaneously operational, political, and design-oriented. It is operational because it requires a willingness to reconsider established frameworks, including the physical, institutional, and functional boundaries that have historically separated ports from cities. It is political and design-oriented because overcoming these barriers entails addressing regulatory and communication challenges while paving the way for new forms of shared governance.

Abstract
Several Italian cities are experimenting with innovative approaches in which co-design plays a key role. Port cities, constrained by limited space, urbanised port hinterlands, and environmentally sensitive coastal areas, are increasingly encouraged to adopt more integrated and flexible approaches - a flexibility that is simultaneously operational, political, and design-oriented. It is operational because it requires a willingness to reconsider established frameworks, including the physical, institutional, and functional boundaries that have historically separated ports from cities. It is political and design-oriented because overcoming these barriers entails addressing regulatory and communication challenges while paving the way for new forms of shared governance.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
