In this study, we analyzed the relationship between physiological and time-domain (TD) functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals during breathing exercises. Results showed a synchronization between cardiovascular and respiratory systems during modulated breathing exercises. We also observed a strong coherence between cerebral TD-NIRS signals and peripheral blood volume changes during breath holding tasks which could indicate a mediation of the autonomic nervous system.

Abstract

In this study, we analyzed the relationship between physiological and time-domain (TD) functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals during breathing exercises. Results showed a synchronization between cardiovascular and respiratory systems during modulated breathing exercises. We also observed a strong coherence between cerebral TD-NIRS signals and peripheral blood volume changes during breath holding tasks which could indicate a mediation of the autonomic nervous system.
