Paper and board packaging recycling involves several actors across the supply chain, from consumers to paper mills. Acknowledging differences across the world, this chapter provides an overview of the system, starting from waste sorting in line with the collection system until the production of secondary raw materials. Processing and equipment design parameters affecting the repulping, screening, and production of SRM are emphasized. Building on this, the chapter concludes by presenting and discussing the available technical and standard methodologies to test the recyclability of fiber-based materials.

Abstract

Paper and board packaging recycling involves several actors across the supply chain, from consumers to paper mills. Acknowledging differences across the world, this chapter provides an overview of the system, starting from waste sorting in line with the collection system until the production of secondary raw materials. Processing and equipment design parameters affecting the repulping, screening, and production of SRM are emphasized. Building on this, the chapter concludes by presenting and discussing the available technical and standard methodologies to test the recyclability of fiber-based materials.
