Digital geomatics survey methods have become an indispensable tool for recording and studying historic gardens. An accurate and complete 3D model forms an essential reference-base for all other kinds of data and the starting point for different types of analysis and activity, including sustainable conservation management. A range of different instruments and procedures are currently used, each having limitations as well as advantages. The article overviews and introduces new survey technologies capable of delivering results rapidly and with unprecedented quality and accuracy.
