In exploring future sustainable alternatives in product design, this study emphasizes the importance of biobased materials, focusing particularly on inte- grating mycelium, the vegetative part of fungi, into children’s toys. Despite grow- ing environmental awareness, consumer acknowledgment and acceptance of these materials are still consolidating. This project born thanks to the collaboration between Politecnico di Milano and Mogu S.r.l., an interior design company lead- ing in the creation of interior design products through fungal bio-manufacturing. In this paper we’ll present the development of a toy for kids incorporating mycelium, merging touchscreen technology with biomaterials. The aim is to create a play experience that is both educational and enjoyable, fostering an early appreciation for biobased materials in children. The technological component has been thought- fully integrated, ensuring that its use enriches the child’s sensory and interactive experience, rather than diverting them from the material and tangible world.
