La ricerca dottorale per il Patrimonio costruito: Un decennio attraverso la lente del Dottorato in Conservazione dei Beni architettonici al Politecnico di Milano = Doctoral Research for Built Heritage: A Decade through the lens of the PhD in Architectural Heritage Conservation at the Politecnico di Milano

Doctoral research-as a meeting point between the thematic interests of future researchers on one hand, and those with solid, mature experience on the other-can be seen as a reflection of the trends and progress within aspecific disciplinary field. Examining the research topics addressed over the past decade within the PhD program in Preservation of Architectural Heritage, launched at the Politecnico di Milano in 1983, can help in creating this snapshot, as well as initiating a necessary discussion on the objectives, effectiveness, and future of third-level education in "Architectural Conservation." This paper, starting with an analysis of the broader developments affecting doctoral programs, examines the transformations within the PhD track under review, the enrolled candidates and their characteristics, and the research topics explored, in order to lay the groundwork for an initial ten-year assessment.
