Abstract

The built heritage dating from the second half of the twentieth century represents one of the key cultural and landscape assets of Milan and its metropolitan area. Its renewal has long been a focus of attention for the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservationists of the Province of Milan and its Foundation. Architects are frequently called upon to intervene in an urban fabric largely composed of buildings of significant architectural value that need to be upgraded, transformed, and refurbished in order to meet contemporary needs. Throughout 2024, the *Sempre Moderno* programme fostered debate on this issue through a series of meetings, an exhibition, and a film programme, examining both completed and ongoing case studies. With contributions from a wide range of stakeholders - including experts, technical professionals, clients, public administrators, and construction companies - the programme explored the current state of this important process of renewal, broadening the perspective from Milan to the wider European context.
