In the mid-1960s, Paola Lanzani (Nerviano, 1933-Milan, 2021) returned to Milan after a brief stint designing with her husband in Bogota, where she worked on various architectural and interior projects. However, the designer immediately showed a marked propensity for the study of retail spaces and furnishings. Before department store design became her preferred field at La Rinascente in Milan, her early Milanese career was linked to furniture and lighting design, where her penchant for teamwork, experimentation with plastics, and affinity for artistic languages emerged. Examples include the displays designed with Enrico Castellani, the screens designed with Dadamaino, the lamps with Turi Simeti, the installations with Livio Castiglioni, etc., as well as some research on domestic interiors. All of these experiences formed a basis that she would intelligently rework during her subsequent work at La Rinascente in Milan. Lanzani's ability to rework and his wide range of interests suggest that his work should be included in the tradition of Milanese “cultured professionalism,” extending both its chronological boundaries and its field of action to a sector, that of retail design, which was considered marginal at the time.

Abstract
Lanzani's ability to rework and his wide range of interests suggest that his work should be included in the tradition of Milanese “cultured professionalism,” extending both its chronological boundaries and its field of action to a sector, that of retail design, which was considered marginal at the time.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
