In a global backdrop of more than 123 million displaced people in 2024, emergency housing has emerged as a crucial challenge at the intersection of humanitarian crises and climate change. This contribution examines the evolution of the shelter, tracing its development from the historical roots of lightweight prefabrication and demountable architecture pioneered by figures such as Prouvé, Gropius, and Fuller, towards a redefinition of shelter not as a static object but as an evolving and “appropriate” process. Moving beyond the logic of standardisation, the research highlights the need for solutions capable of combining rapid deployment with dignified living conditions, culminating in the presentation of the H7Shelter project. Based on telescopic frames and appropriate technologies, this modular, foldable system bridges the gap between the precariousness of the tent and the rigidity of prefabricated structures, providing a versatile and reusable solution that can be integrated with locally available materials. Prototype testing, conducted in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano and the Italian Civil Protection Department, validates a model capable of transforming emergency response into a laboratory for social and technological innovation, empowering affected communities while outlining a new ethical framework for contemporary temporary architecture.
In un contesto globale segnato da oltre 123 milioni di sfollati nel 2024, l'abitare d'emergenza emerge come una sfida cruciale che intreccia crisi umanitarie e cambiamenti climatici. Il presente contributo analizza l'evoluzione dello shelter, partendo dalle radici storiche della prefabbricazione leggera e dell’architettura smontabile di maestri come Prouvé, Gropius e Fuller, per giungere a una ridefinizione del rifugio non più come oggetto statico, ma come processo evolutivo e "appropriato". Attraverso il superamento della logica della standardizzazione, la ricerca evidenzia la necessità di soluzioni che coniughino rapidità d'intervento e dignità abitativa, approdando alla presentazione del progetto H7Shelter. Questo sistema modulare e pieghevole, basato su telai telescopici e tecnologie appropriate, si pone come anello di congiunzione tra la precarietà della tenda e la rigidità del prefabbricato, offrendo una soluzione versatile, riutilizzabile e integrabile con materiali locali. La sperimentazione del prototipo, condotta in collaborazione con il Politecnico di Milano e la Protezione Civile, valida un modello capace di trasformare la gestione dell'emergenza in un laboratorio di innovazione sociale e tecnica, restituendo autonomia alle popolazioni colpite e tracciando una nuova etica per l'architettura temporanea contemporanea.
