This article examines the design, manufacturing, and construction development of façade systems, investigating the interaction between two paradigms of morphological, typological, functional, and technical development within contemporary architectural practice: hybridisation and manipulation. Hybridisation entails new forms of association, ‘bonding’ (between ‘complementary bases’ and novel aggregations, either extraneous to the original configuration or inherent within it and subsequently combined in innovative ways), and ‘grafting’. These processes generate façade typologies of a ‘different species’, resulting from the ‘fusion’ of systems and materials of diverse origins, conceived as an ‘intermingling of constituent elements’ drawn from distinct cultural, semantic, and physical contexts. On this basis, the hybridisation of façade systems seeks to enhance their linguistic and perceptual qualities, while fostering the legitimisation, recognisability (often of an ‘archetypal’ nature), and ‘shared acceptance’ of products originating from standardised industrial production. Manipulation, by contrast, approaches façade systems—from structural frames and enclosure elements to interfaces and functional components or devices—as ‘malleable’ and ‘workable’ assemblies. This process involves the interaction and integration of different forms of knowledge, particularly those relating to materials science and manufacturing procedures, with direct and explicit implications for performance. It also encompasses the potential to intervene in traditional compositional and construction practices, ultimately leading to the systemic or organic configuration of assemblies comprising technical elements, products, and materials of diverse origins. Applied to building envelopes, the paradigm of manipulation gives rise to processes of ‘original reinterpretation’ and extends towards the concept of ‘adaptability’. This adaptability concerns emerging building typologies and uses, as well as environmental forces that must be mitigated, screened, reflected, or channelled to contribute to the overall performance of the building. Within this framework, the manipulation of façade components involves the development of ‘devices’, ‘mechanisms’—conceived through processes of architectural invention and mechanical ingenuity—and ‘operable contrivances’, capable of responding to changing functional, environmental, and construction requirements.

Abstract
Within this framework, the manipulation of façade components involves the development of ‘devices’, ‘mechanisms’—conceived through processes of architectural invention and mechanical ingenuity—and ‘operable contrivances’, capable of responding to changing functional, environmental, and construction requirements.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
