Parquet Deformations is a paradigmatic design exercise introduced by William Huff at the Ulm School of Design in the 1960s, with the aim of enhancing students’ ability to investigate the configurational dimension of space through the sequential transformation of patterns. This paper proposes a multi-layered interpretation of the exercise, situating it within a framework of computational experimentation based on a comparison between Artificial Intelligence and Computational Design. The objective is to highlight the pedagogical significance of the exercise, both as an instrument of design thinking and as a methodological tool relevant to contemporary design representation. At the same time, the paper examines the similarities and differences between these two approaches, which, despite sharing a common computational foundation, differ considerably in their formal characteristics, functional principles, and practical applications.

Abstract
Parquet Deformations is a paradigmatic design exercise introduced by William Huff at the Ulm School of Design in the 1960s, with the aim of enhancing students’ ability to investigate the configurational dimension of space through the sequential transformation of patterns. This paper proposes a multi-layered interpretation of the exercise, situating it within a framework of computational experimentation based on a comparison between Artificial Intelligence and Computational Design. The objective is to highlight the pedagogical significance of the exercise, both as an instrument of design thinking and as a methodological tool relevant to contemporary design representation. At the same time, the paper examines the similarities and differences between these two approaches, which, despite sharing a common computational foundation, differ considerably in their formal characteristics, functional principles, and practical applications.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
