Multicore and multimode fibers have established themselves as key enablers of high-throughput data transmission in optical networks. However, to fully harness the potential of space division multiplexing (SDM), its applications must extend beyond capacity scaling. By exploiting the space domain, SDM fibers can enable more flexible and granular traffic routing, optimizing network efficiency and resource utilization. Additionally, SDM can enhance the performance of fiber optic sensing, transforming deployed fibers into intelligent monitoring infrastructures for environmental and network surveillance. This dual-purpose functionality, combining advanced data transport with enhanced sensing, could drive the widespread adoption of SDM technology, making it a fundamental component of future optical networks.
