Franco Dacquati: contemporary architecture and the memory of war The work of the multifaceted Franco Dacquati, still in need of full understanding and appreciation, stands out for its expressive research spanning painting, sculpture, poetry, and architectural reflection, intertwining civic engagement with a critical investigation of the relationship between space, memory, and society. After briefly retracing the key stages of Dacquati’s work, this essay explores some of his reflections on modern architecture, emphasizing the symbolic and social value he attributes to the urban landscape. The text highlights his fascination with the vertical forms of the contemporary city, seen as an expression of progress and collective identity, as well as his concern for a certain ‘soulless’ urbanization. Despite its brevity, this study examines the originality of Dacquati’s artistic, architectural, and cultural research, shaped by his personal experience of World War II and a strong awareness of history, understood as a cornerstone of a shared collective identity.
