Abstract

The healthcare sector has increasingly demonstrated its attention and adaptability to ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) challenges. Hospital infrastructures, where healthcare services are provided, play a leading role in the transition towards ESG-driven models. Through an exploration of the existing scientific and grey literature, and a case study investigation, the study aims at scrutinizing financing models involving the private sector, to support public healthcare organizations to enhance the ESG performance of hospital infrastructures. The analysis conducted has led to the identification of various financing schemes to improve ESG performance in hospital environments such as Public–Private Partnership, Energy Performance Contracts (EPC), Green and Social Impact Project Bonds. The pivotal role of ESG strategies enables the strengthening of hospital infrastructures for the improvement of societies and the reduction of environmental impacts. The chapter emphasizes the critical role of sustainable healthcare investments within the ESG framework, particularly in relation to hospital infrastructure. By exploring various financial models and instruments designed to enhance ESG performance, the analysis highlights the opportunity for healthcare institutions to collaborate with the private sector to renovate the hospital building stock while achieving meaningful environmental, social, and financial outcomes.
