Since the 2022–2023 academic year, Renzo Piano, Pritzker Prize laureate and alumnus of the Politecnico di Milano, has taught a course entitled Laboratorio Arte del Costruire (The Art of Building Design Studio) at the university’s School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering. The course offers students a design experience grounded in the study and understanding of built works, promoting a methodological approach aimed at developing the capacity for synthesis that has historically characterised the architect as both a builder and an intellectual. The teaching methodology is founded on the observation and analysis of the lecturer’s own architectural projects, encouraging a critical reassessment of completed works in order to stimulate students to develop their own architectural vision through direct dialogue with designers, technical specialists, and construction professionals. The projects documented by the Renzo Piano Foundation at the Politecnico di Milano provide the methodological and conceptual foundations for this educational experience. The course is structured primarily around dialogue between the different disciplines and areas of expertise involved in the architectural design process, from initial conception to the construction and completion of the proposed works. This paper seeks to explore, from an insider’s perspective, the content, methodology, and outcomes of this educational experience, which exemplifies the pedagogical role of built architecture. Within this approach, the completed architectural work becomes both a methodological foundation for design practice and, simultaneously, a manifesto of a vision of architecture as a heteronomous discipline.
