This paper focuses on the aerodynamic design of the 271-meter-high towers for the Julsund long-span bridge in a fjord-crossing project in Norway. The complex topography of the fjords introduces unique wind conditions, potentially affecting the aerodynamic behaviour of the towers. To investigate these effects, a multi-stage experimental campaign was conducted at the Politecnico di Milano wind tunnel. First, topographic tests using a 1:1000 scale terrain model were performed to assess wind conditions at the tower location and observe variations in wind features with height. Subsequently, sectional model tests measured static force coefficients, evaluated vortex-induced vibrations, and assessed aeroelastic stability across various mean angles of attack. Finally, aeroelastic model tests were also carried out to verify the overall performance of the tower. This paper presents the experimental methodologies and preliminary findings, emphasizing key aerodynamic considerations for the towers’ design and stability under challenging wind conditions.
