The essay reconstructs the history of the Visconti bridge-dam at Valeggio through manuscript and printed sources. Dominating the course of the River Mincio, the structure was built by the engineer Domenico da Firenze in the late fourteenth century at the behest of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, within the context of the conflict between Milan and Mantua that had developed from around the mid-fourteenth century onwards. Historical descriptions, together with the surviving remains of the structure, help shed light on its controversial and much-debated function: was it a bridge, or a dam designed to block the Mincio, the outflow of Lake Garda? The imposing structure undoubtedly performed both functions, while also serving as a defensive barrier connected to and integrated within the so-called 'Serraglio Veronese', the extensive fortified wall linking Borghetto sul Mincio to Nogarole. Equipped with towers and other defensive structures, the 'Serraglio' was begun in 1345 at the behest of Mastino II della Scala.

Abstract
The essay reconstructs the history of the Visconti bridge-dam at Valeggio through manuscript and printed sources.
