Design for Migrants towards Capacity Building

As the scope of design is extending beyond the traditional form giver, design practitioners and researchers have been actively participating in diverse social discourses, actions and areas. A better understanding of design and designers through an updated lens could open more potential collaboration between design and other disciplines, as well as reflect on where the design discipline goes. This chapter aims at investigating the evolutional role of design and designers in contributing to one of the most urgent social issues – migration. It starts with reviewing the revolution of the design discipline, then it involves the discussion on how the certain essential feature of design could offer alternative ways to face and deal with the migration issue. Thanks to three case studies, the chapter eventually shows different roles and models that design is intervening actively and bringing positive results on the topic.
