Abstract

The essay traces the main design and construction stages of the second Milanese psychiatric hospital, built in the first half of the 1920s after a long design process that began at the dawn of the twentieth century. Conceived as a «Great Asylum Astanteria» it was first a private clinic and then a public psychiatric hospital (1939). Thanks to a careful disposal process, its pavilions have now become a well-known museum of contemporary art.
