The ASP project “Towards a New Architecture for the A22 Motorway Service Areas” aims at redefining the concept of service areas through the drafting of guidelines and the elaboration of three exemplary projects. The integration of different disciplinary approaches is the key to realising a multi-scalar project, ranging from a broad territorial vision to the more specific definition of services for individual areas. The case study is the Italian motorway A22, that connects Campogalliano to the Brenner Pass, passing through valuable and heterogeneous landscapes, which are traced, in the framework of the research, to three territorial macro-sections. In the first section, the plain is characterised by a polycentric structure, where cultivated fields alternate with human settlements. Continuing northwards, fields gradually give way to orchards and, finally, to forests. This transition also has significant impacts on the motorway route, in terms of uses and tourism potential, and in terms of space and relationship with the morphology of the places: for example, in the mountainous section, the infrastructure must deal with the reliefs and scarcity of space; on the contrary, the plain offers the possibility of using larger measures and dimensions to define the shapes of the route and its accessory structures.

Abstract
This transition also has significant impacts on the motorway route, in terms of uses and tourism potential, and in terms of space and relationship with the morphology of the places: for example, in the mountainous section, the infrastructure must deal with the reliefs and scarcity of space; on the contrary, the plain offers the possibility of using larger measures and dimensions to define the shapes of the route and its accessory structures.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
