In recent years, the proliferation of digital tools and BIM authoring software, together with the increased accuracy of 3D models, has allowed them to be used in the management of the built heritage. One of the main advantages of adopting a BIM methodology for the architectural preservation is the possibility of storing all the data resulting from both survey and research activities in a single digital environment, thus allowing professionals to access the data resulting from previous analyses without having to repeat the surveys. As it is well known, the management of the available knowledge and data is an issue of particular importance for the planned conservation of a historical building, which is recognized as one of the best strategies for optimizing the available resources, accurately planning maintenance activities without wasting time or economic resources. According to its principles, planned conservation can benefit from the application of the BIM methodology in many ways, since the building data can be easily consulted, periodically implemented and updated, and always verifiable. The paper presents an example of this specific methodology, highlighting the benefits that the new organization of the data made possible by BIM software brings to the planned conservation of a historical building. The case study concerns the ex-Colonia Elioterapica of Legnano (Summer Camp), a building designed in 1983 by the B.B.P.R Studio (the young architects Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressut, Rogers) and listed as an Italian cultural heritage .
