The paper is an attempt to understand the current problems in protection and preservation of Soviet modernist heritage of former Soviet Republics. The way to understanding lies through the complicated history of heritage protection in USSR, and the way it influenced current day laws in this field. Problems of protection of Soviet Modernist heritage in Russia are studied as an example, since the consequences of Soviet policies are the most evident at the core of the former Soviet Union.
